Elevation F-4: vinyl privacy panel

Vinyl fences, as long as the vinyl is made for this sun.

No painting, no staining, no rot. The catch in Del Rio is quality: bargain vinyl yellows and turns brittle here, so the product you pick matters more than anywhere else.

Sun is the test

UV AND HEAT

Vinyl is PVC, and the difference between good and bad PVC shows up fast under Del Rio sun. Quality fence vinyl is made with UV inhibitors mixed through the material and a thick wall. Cheap vinyl skips both, and within a few summers it chalks, yellows, and cracks when something bumps it.

Showroom samples look identical, so we tell you which product we are installing and why, and the warranty that comes with it.

Vinyl also grows and shrinks noticeably between a July afternoon and a January night. Panels have to sit loose enough in the rails to move. Installers who fasten them tight get buckled panels and popped rails by the second summer.

Wind and posts

STRUCTURE
White vinyl privacy fence running along a grassy backyard
White privacy panelsTHE MOST COMMON COLOR, AND THE COOLEST

A solid vinyl panel catches wind the same way a wood privacy fence does, but the posts are hollow. On gate posts, corners, and open exposures, we add steel or aluminum inserts inside the posts and set them in concrete, bored into rock where the ground calls for it.

Gates are where vinyl fences usually fail first. A reinforced gate post and a gate built on a metal frame keep it from sagging.

Living with it

MAINTENANCE

Vinyl needs washing, not painting. Del Rio dust settles on it, and a garden hose with a soft brush once or twice a year keeps it bright. Sprinklers that hit the fence daily can leave mineral spots, so aim them away.

White stays coolest and hides fading best. Tan, gray, and wood-grain colors are available; darker colors absorb more heat and need a product rated for it.

Permit position

CITY OF DEL RIO

Inside city limits, a new vinyl fence needs a city permit like any other new fence, and so does replacing half or more of an existing one. We file it for you. See the Del Rio permit guide.

Common questions

FAQ
Does vinyl hold up in Del Rio heat?

Quality vinyl does. Look for UV-stabilized PVC with a thick wall and a real warranty. Bargain vinyl without UV inhibitors yellows and turns brittle here within a few summers.

Will a vinyl fence blow over in the wind?

Not if the posts are built for it. Solid panels catch wind like wood does, so we add metal inserts in gates, corners, and exposed posts and set them in concrete.

Why are my neighbor's vinyl panels buckled?

Usually because they were fastened too tight. Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature and has to float in the rails. If fastened rigidly, it buckles in summer.

How do I clean a vinyl fence?

A hose and a soft brush, with mild soap if needed, once or twice a year. Keep sprinklers aimed away to avoid hard-water spots.

Do I need a permit for a vinyl fence?

Inside Del Rio city limits, a new vinyl fence needs a permit, the same as wood or chain link. We handle the application.
